My One-Year-Old

Orion is no longer a baby, he is a little boy. Well, a toddler at least! So much changes once your baby starts to walk, which happened in full force two weeks after his first birthday. He is into EVERYTHING. He knows every corner of our apartment, and has many favorite hiding places, things to get into, pull down, open up, etc, etc. Also, he has learned how to CLIMB. As in on the kitchen table!

He is making strides in his speech as well, although the high pitched array of ear-piercing screams are still his favorite. He can imitate many sounds and has repeated words like "touch", "toys", ba-ba (bye bye), hiya (hi), to name a few. He loves to play games and make people laugh, and to laugh himself. His favorites are chase & peek-a-boo. He is outgoing in public, going up to strangers if we let him to say hi and attempt to make friends with them.

This week, he got his first major ouchie, when he face-planted on the cement when I was pulling him in a wagon. He bit his lip, and scraped his lower lip and chin pretty badly. He was a sad boy, and I was a sad mom!

A confession: as many strides as Orion has been making (literally), there is one thing that I'm still waiting for: for him to sleep through the night! He needs mom to help him fall asleep, and his longest stretch between waking is about 4 hours. Hopefully this will change before age 2!

exploring a maze in an indoor playground
playing with his cousin
peek-a-boo!
he found a race track in the window sill
loving his cars!
uh-oh....
Mommy makes everything better... =)
out mowing the lawn...
and helping to water the garden

taking a break in his new baby pool

he loves to be where he's not supposed to be...

and climbing into tight spaces...

conked out, at last!

Memorial Day Birthday Party for Orion

Orion's official birthday party was on Memorial Day, which fell on May 31st this year, so almost a week after his birthday. But he was a Memorial Day baby, so what time would be better for a party? We had a picnic in Polliwog Park in Manhattan Beach (which worked well with our frog theme for the party!) We BBQ'd, ate, visited, played on the playground, opened presents, and ate yummy cake!

Favorites from the day:
  • we were able to reserve our table, so we didn't need to worry about finding a spot on the busiest park day of the year.
  • my homemade cake for Orion turned out SOOO yummy! A banana cake with cream cheese and whipped cream frosting. With berries on top.
  • our lovely friends who came to the party and got Orion such sweet and thoughtful gifts.
  • it was a warm and sunny day!
  • Orion enjoyed himself and loved eating his cake.
Unexpected surprises:
  • the handful of VIP's that called last minute to tell us they wouldn't be coming...
  • Orion slept through about half of his party-- oops!
  • We forgot a handful of food items and had to send a friend to the store... (thanks, Ivana)
  • I didn't realize how hard it would be to get everything we needed to the park-- the utensils, food, decorations, etc. It was worse than camping!
  • I didn't have time to get ready after all that preparing and packing, so I look less than cute in the pictures...
  • We spent SOOOOO much more money than we planned. We wanted everything to be perfect, and we wanted our little guy to have some special gifts. But who better to splurge on than your precious one-year-old!

I guess we can chalk it all up to experience, and be that much more prepared for the next 1st birthday we plan. And no, that is not an announcement! I'm just so glad we could celebrate our little guy. We love him so much, and we all made it through his first year in one piece! Wahoo!

Happy Birthday Baby! We love you!

A Birthday Camping Trip

Orion's first birthday was celebrated twice-- his actual birthday was spent camping with the students of PS#1 on its annual camp-out. Last year, Orion was born on the Monday following the school camping trip, and this year, his birthday fell right on the first night of the trip! I was a bit worried about this, because I was expected to be at the camp-out, but I wasn't going to be away from my baby on his first birthday! So I got the okay to have Michael and Orion come too. It turned out to be a very fun time, and Orion enjoyed himself immensely. He had hoards of kids paying attention to him, lots of dirt to play in and fresh air. Michael brought a cupcake for him to eat while we sang to him, which he enjoyed thoroughly. Here are some pics from our little birthday camping trip!

11 months and counting

This will be my last blog post before Orion turns one on May 25th! Here are some new developments:

He's starting to share
He waves bye bye
He cruises everywhere
He wants to walk, and has tried taking steps
He loves to laugh and have fun
He tries to say "I love you"
He gives amazing hugs, and goes "ahhh" while doing it
He eats a ton, and has grown to 20 lbs and 30 inches
He likes to chase and be chased
He can empty a drawer or a bag in seconds
He can eat berries like nobody's business
He's always working hard at getting into something
He loves crawling in grass
He climbs up and down off of furniture
He talks on the phone and really listens
He loves the sound of his own voice, which includes an ear piercing, glass shattering scream
He loves interacting with other kids and adults
He can charm anybody

We are having so much fun with him-- he's such a cutie! It's hard to believe that's it's almost been a YEAR since he was born.

A surprise visit from Lauren and family!

Just as my mom was leaving, my sister Lauren told us that she was planning on coming a week later! Her husband was switching jobs, and they had a small window to do some traveling, so they decided to come and visit me and my brother in LA. They drove all the way down the coast from Washington, and enjoyed the sights along the way. Once they arrived, we enjoyed a few days of play with them. It was so great to see their family! This was their first trip to California. We visited, played at the beach, and just hung out. Best of all was having 6 cousins together at one time. (Lauren & Anders' 3 kids, Niel's 2 kids, and our 1 kid!)

Here are some pics of our mini-reunion:
